Grey Whales are some of the most amazing animals on our whole planet, so it’s not surprising that the Grey Whale Garden is one of the most popular features in the Children’s Garden! Have you ever had fun climbing on its tail or sitting in the shade under it, walking on the “whale wall”, looking up at its water spout, or winking at one of its giant eyes? The Children’s Garden Committee is doing research right now to see how we can add a baby grey whale to the “ocean” part of the Children’s Garden, to keep the mama whale company!
Check out this fun factsheet!
Grey Whales have one of the longest migrations of any animal, and can travel over 14,000 miles every year. Wow- check out this diagram to see their whole annual migration route!
Have fun singing these songs too!
Sea Turtles are another creature that swims thousands of miles every year. Loggerheads and Leatherbacks are two of the sea turtle species that live in the Pacific Ocean, and spend most all of their lives underwater. New research has shown that sea turtles use the earth’s magnetic field like a GPS (global positioning satellite) to be able to find their way back to the exact beach where they were born, then come out of the water and lay their own eggs. The Children’s Garden Committee is doing research right now to see how we can add a sea turtle sculpture to the “ocean” part of the Children’s Garden, to honor this amazing creature!
